Berlin, Day 2

Yay, we got to sleep in... until 6am.

We're not museum kinda people but today we are making an exception to go to the Pergamon museum.  It's the museum of ancient history and the pictures will show why we went

Memorial To The Murdered Jews

Berlin's holocaust memorial consists of hundreds of granite squares of varying height arranged over sloping hills.  Walking through reminded me of a corn maze. Very somber experience.

Pastrami To Die For

I had targeted a small restaurant named Mogg for our lunch.  Walking there, we meandered through the Jewish Quarter where stark reminders of the families that had been taken out of their homes by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps.

This sobering reminder was replaced by happiness as we dove into the scrumptious pastrami sandwiches at Mogg.  My goodness, they were awesome.  It was even more impressive that this restaurant, with patrons out the door, was run by only two guys.

Mauerpark

After that great lunch, it was time to work off those pounds and what better way (according to Sonja) than another flea market.  Only this was the mother of all flea markets.  Held every Sunday at Mauerpark, literally hundreds of vendors are hawking their wares.  And right around the tents there were thousands of young people hanging out at the park.  Picnicing, throwing frisbees and watching the street performers.

Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall came down in 1989.  It was the wall that separated East Berlin (soviet controlled) from West Berlin (allied controlled).  Those living in the east could not come to the west and vice versa.  However, not all of the wall was taken down and we walked the length of the remaining wall.

The east side of the wall has been artistically painted while the west side is plain white.

And to finish off a great (and exhausting) day...  we treated ourselves to a restaurant that only sold french fries!

3am wakeup call for an early flight to Copenhagen.  Auf Wiedersehen Berlin.
