Copenhagen, What A Wonderful Place

While doing the planning for this trip, Copenhagen was not the top place on my list.  We're going to see Eric Clapton in concert and that was the main reason for coming here.  Oh, did I ever underestimate this city.  It has been a fantastic stop.

From Nyhavn...

To the Danish hot dogs...

To the changing of the guard...

Street performers...

To the best hamburger I've ever eaten (from a gas station, no less)...

This is a butter burger.  Notice the puddle of butter!  They take a few pounds of hamburger meat, shove sticks of butter into it, mix it all up and make their patties.  Oh my, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

The architecture and buildings are beautiful.  Many from the 1700's.  One such structure that we went into is called the Round Tower.  I have to tell you, Sonja laughed and laughed when she got a chance to watch this video.

But the view was spectacular.

Also, here in Copenhagen, I think I pulled off the best surprise ever.  We went out to dinner last night at a place called Restaurant 1733.  What Sonja didn't know was that I had been in touch with a couple from Brooklyn that are very old friends.  David and Alice are some of the best people we know.  They just happen to be in Copenhagen at the same time, so we arranged to have dinner together.  I never told Sonja.  About a block from the restaurant, I could see David and Alice standing outside and I told Sonja that I had to confess that we were having dinner guests.  She looked up and saw them and I thought she was going to faint.  I've never seen Sonja completely lose it before, but this time she did.  John and Dee, this was as good as the time you surprised your grandparents in Charleston!  We spent almost three hours at this restaurant, eating, telling stories and reminiscing.  It was the best surprise I've ever pulled off.

Not bad for a first day in Denmark, huh?

Second day wasn't too shabby either...

We didn't have a lot on the itinerary today.  We had a harbor tour scheduled and then the concert.  But today started out like no day has ever started out.  We went to the subway station to head into town and this was what greeted us:
You won't see that on a NY subway.

Next stop, breakfast.  And when you're in Denmark, you should eat a danish right?  I must tell you...  this was so darn good, we had to do it twice!

With our bellies full of deliciousness, we headed to the water and our boat tour.  But not before we passed through the Queen's Palace.  Note the four distinct residences.

And her church isn't too shabby either.

Our new friend that we met in Berlin, Sven, said the best way to experience Copenhagen was on a boat.  Was he ever correct!

We toured through the Venice-like canals, past really cool boats and even went to an island that used to be a Danish fortress until the Nazis took it over during the war.

You would think that this would be a full day, right?  No way man!  A bucket list item needed to be checked off.

Goodbye Copenhagen.  We loved it!
